When we think female, we tend to think estrogen but progesterone is a major player in our hormone cycle and is actually the most frequent hormone to  need supplementation to counter-act the impact of wayward estrogen.

Around 35, your ovaries start to produce less progesterone. Its decline is in more immediate and far greater than estrogen.  It is quite common to experience an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone and as a result of that imbalance experience symptoms such as:

  • tender breasts
  • changes to menstrual bleeding
  • uterine fibroids
  • ovarian cysts
  • water retention or bloating.

In addition you might experience:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • moodiness.

Sound like a bad case of PMS?  Then you are right.

There is almost no such thing as too much progesterone.  When pregnant, during the last trimester, our bodies produce huge amounts of progesterone without any ill effect to ourselves or our babies.  So what needs to be treated is too little progesterone.

And there is more good news.  Treating a progesterone deficiency (estrogen dominance) is both completely and utterly safe, it is easy.

Why is it safe?  Because bio-identical progesterone is available over the counter at a reasonable price puttint it in the reach of everyone.  Second, being bio-identical it is completely safe. Women have been using it for decades with no ill-effect.  (The ill-effects come fro prescription progestins which are not bio-identical and therefore can be patented and therefore can be sold for large sums of money by pharmaceutical companies. But that is another story).

Why is it easy?  Because it can be used topically.  You just rub it on your skin. How much you use and how you use it depends on your personal situation.  (Read a couple of our recommended books to learn more).

So it is a good idea to get it tested.

Ideally, you should always test progesterone in combination with estrogen.  So we recommend the follow test kits in order of importance:

If money is an issue then get the Basic Hormone Panel.

Once you know your level, you make take a three prong attack to deal with it:

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • some form of hormone therapy.

It is natural that your estrogen levels will decrease. It is not the aim of hormone therapy to keep your hormones at their youthful levels.  The aim is to recreate a balance between your hormones.  Hormone therapy is not the fountain of youth but it might be the key to aging gracefully.
